Black Springs
Teenaged twin sisters, Jodeanne and Ellie Mae Carter have little hope of either escaping from or adding drama to their boring existence while Auntie, their martinet of a guardian and her transgender sidekick keep an iron grip on the sun-scorched Midwestern town of Black Springs and the Truck Stop Café, where they work. All that changes when the arrival of a stranger is closely followed by a disastrous fire at the Saturday night dance, that shatters the little community. As the body count continues to rise, Jodie and Ellie begin to investigate. They soon find themselves enmeshed in a web of money laundering, international art smuggling, police corruption and murder. Despite feeling they are safe in their own environment, it becomes clear that someone doesn’t appreciate their meddling and the closer they get to the truth, the more their lives are in danger. The question in both their minds is, just how close to home does that danger lurk?
Told from Jodie’s POV, Black Springs is a contemporary YA thriller of 90,500 words.
